About the Film
Water is the most fundamental element of life, yet in the United States, it remains a silent threat for thousands of families each year. Drowning is often seen as an unfortunate accident—sudden, tragic, and unavoidable. What if drowning isn’t just an accident? What if it’s preventable? What if swimming, a skill so many take for granted, is not just a sport or recreation but a necessary life-saving ability that too many people never have the chance to learn?
When Everyone Swims challenges this notion by offering a powerful compilation of inspirational and insightful stories. Through the lens of water literacy, the film shows how people from every walk of life can build a healthy, fulfilling relationship with the water.
At its heart, When Everyone Swims is a call to action. It follows those who are fighting to make swimming accessible to all—parents determined to protect their children, instructors breaking down fears, and communities rallying to ensure no one is left behind. It is a story of resilience, determination, and the belief that every person, regardless of background or circumstance, should have the opportunity to feel safe and confident in the water.
Through the voices of Olympic athletes, water safety experts, and families who have experienced both triumph and loss, When Everyone Swims explores the essential role of swimming in our lives. The film dives into the challenges of learning to swim, the barriers that keep people from the water, and the movements working to change that. It reveals how something as simple as swim lessons can mean the difference between life and death and why access to water safety education should be a universal right, not a privilege.
